Smart Film adds switchable privacy to suitable existing glass. PDLC Smart Glass places the active layer inside a glazing unit. For a retrofit, the central advantage of film is keeping glass that already serves the space; for a new glazing project, compare both systems as complete installations.
Understanding the Technology
PDLC Smart Film and PDLC Smart Glass use polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) technology to control visibility. When power is applied, the liquid crystals align, making the material more transparent. When power is switched off, they scatter light, creating a frosted appearance.
Key Differences: Smart Glass vs. Smart Film
Smart Glass
PDLC Smart Glass incorporates the switchable layer within the glass unit.
Retrofitting typically requires replacing the existing glass unit, adding material and installation costs.
Available dimensions and shapes depend on the manufacturer and glass assembly.
Smart Film
Designed as an adhesive layer that can be applied to existing glass.
Can avoid the cost of replacing suitable existing glass.
Can be custom-cut for compatible glass, within the film’s size and shape limits.
Provides switchable privacy with the flexibility of a retrofit installation.
Cost Comparison
At Rapid Glass ATX, we offer Smart Film at $50 per square foot, providing an affordable and efficient solution. Here is a film-only example for a door’s glass panel measuring 60.5 × 20 inches:
Feature | Smart Film (Rapid Glass) | Smart Glass (Competitor) |
Cost per sq. ft. | $50 | Obtain a current supplier quote |
Example Material Cost | ~$420 (film only; installation quoted separately) | Obtain a current glass-only quote |
Estimated Project Lead Time | 3–4 weeks estimated project lead time; on-site duration quoted separately | Lead time varies by glazing supplier and project |
Smart Film can be applied to suitable existing glass, avoiding replacement of the glazing. The estimated lead time is for the overall project, not time spent installing on site. Rapid Glass ATX’s five-year limited warranty applies to products and components it supplies and installs; see Terms and Conditions.
Are Smart Film, smart tint, and privacy glass the same thing?
Product names can blur different technologies. Switchable privacy film, electric privacy film, and PDLC film often describe a layer that changes between a clearer and a frosted appearance. Smart Glass describes glazing with an integrated active layer, but the term also covers technologies intended to darken glass for solar control. Ask which technology a quote includes before comparing its function or cost.
In this comparison, Smart Film means adhesive PDLC privacy film and Smart Glass means integrated PDLC glazing. Both address changing visual privacy. A product that gradually darkens while retaining a view is a different comparison. Our Smart Film versus solar tint guide explains why controlling sunlight and obscuring a sightline should be considered separately.
When retrofit Smart Film has the clearest advantage
If your glass is suitable and does not otherwise need replacement, an adhesive installation lets you keep that glazing while adding adjustable privacy. This is the central reason to consider Smart Film for an existing office partition, entry sidelight, or residential window. It makes the privacy upgrade a distinct project instead of automatically making it a glazing replacement.
Start with a review of the substrate, existing coatings, frame details, temperature exposure, and available power. The word retrofit does not mean every opening accepts the same film. Moving glass, wet environments, and large panes each require an appropriate product and installation plan. Keep the existing glass only after its suitability has been checked.
When integrated Smart Glass belongs in the comparison
A new building, a damaged glass unit, or a planned window replacement creates a different starting point. If glazing is already being selected, an integrated switchable layer can be evaluated alongside the rest of the glass assembly. The architect and glazing supplier can review thickness, safety requirements, dimensions, edge details, and the connection layout together.
For those projects, compare the complete glazing and installation scope with the film option. The price of one active layer does not describe the price of a finished window. Likewise, replacing a pane is not automatically a major structural project. The opening, frame, access, and construction sequence determine the amount of work.
Compare clarity and privacy with a working sample
Look at both operating states from the positions where people actually stand or sit. In the clearer state, check the view at several angles. In the frosted state, review nearby objects, silhouettes, and room lighting. Glass appearance is a daily part of using the space, so give the sample the same attention you give the price.
Frosted privacy allows light through and should not be treated as a blackout shade. Visual separation also does not create sound insulation. If a bedroom needs darkness or a meeting room needs acoustic confidentiality, plan those functions alongside the switchable glazing rather than expecting a change in appearance to provide them.
Questions that make film and glass quotes comparable
Request the model, dimensions, finish details, power equipment, control method, installation scope, and warranty terms from each supplier. Ask who services the system and how a damaged component would be replaced. Confirm whether any quoted solar, UV, or safety performance applies to the complete assembly being supplied.
For suitable existing glass, Rapid Glass Smart Film offers the practical route this article focuses on: add on-demand privacy while keeping the glass you already use. Start with a Smart Film sample, then compare a project quote with the alternative that fits your building.
Which One Is Right for You?
If you want switchable privacy on suitable existing glass, Smart Film offers a retrofit option without replacing the glass. Smart Glass may suit a new glazing project or a design that calls for an integrated switchable layer.
